RYDE | World’s First Real-time Carpooling App | Behind the Drive – Johnny’s Take on Carpooling
RYDE is a community based initiative that uses mobile and geo-location technology to match riders, who request for rides, with drivers going the same way. At the end of the ride, riders donate cash directly to drivers to defray the cost of the trip. RYDE does not take a cut from the donation but charges a booking fee, through a credit card transaction, to facilitate the match.

08 Sep Behind the Drive – Johnny’s Take on Carpooling

Hello Johnny! Thanks for agreeing to be part of this interview.

Maybe you could start by telling us a little bit more about yourself?

Hi RYDE, I’m Meng Kwang (Johnny) and turning 42 this year. I graduated from Aussie with an IT degree in 2000 and currently, a director in my own company dealing with energy efficiency devices for household and automotive.

Where do you live? What are your commuting patterns in the week?

I live in the eastern part of Singapore and I work from Monday to Saturday in the afternoon. I send my wife to work in the morning during weekdays. During my pockets of free time, I will check out the RYDE app for carpooling passengers.

How did you know about RYDE? How did it change your life?

I knew it from my customer, Mr. Chang, who is a RYDE driver as well.

I started using RYDE late April 2016. I’m glad I did so because I love to drive, interact and make new friends! I also got my new car not too long ago. Most of the RYDE passengers are nice and friendly and we can chat about almost anything. I also have a few regular RYDE riders. I would like to thank RYDE for providing these opportunities to me.

What was your most memorable carpooling experience?

Recently, one of my regular passengers went overseas and bought some snacks for me! I am pleasantly surprised by the nice gesture.

Would you support a Singapore start-up?

Why not? I always support initiatives that encourage social interactions among people and at the same time allow us to create a greener environment by reducing carbon emissions through carpooling.

RYDE has definitely gained my support and I hope to see more fellow Singaporeans stepping out of their comfort zone to develop creative ideas, bring harmony and encourage better living in our little red dot!
