RYDE | World’s First Real-time Carpooling App | Behind the Ride – Winnie Shi
RYDE is a community based initiative that uses mobile and geo-location technology to match riders, who request for rides, with drivers going the same way. At the end of the ride, riders donate cash directly to drivers to defray the cost of the trip. RYDE does not take a cut from the donation but charges a booking fee, through a credit card transaction, to facilitate the match.

04 Nov Behind the Ride – Winnie Shi

1) Share with us your most memorable carpool experience (or share a few!)

It was when I first started trying out the RYDE app. I met a warm and friendly lady driver with an interesting job as a balloon sculptor. We had a great chat during the journey. On the second occasion she accepted my ride request, she took me by surprise when she gave me a flower balloon she made as a gift. This gesture brightened up and made my day. She changed my point of view about carpooling as I was initially skeptical about it, thinking it will be awkward or unsafe. Since then, I have made carpooling on RYDE my way of travelling.

Having met lots of great people from using this app, there is another driver who made an impact on me recently. He has accepted my requests a couple of times and through our conversations, he shared his life experiences with me. He has given up a high paying job to pursue what he believes in and enjoys doing. That made me ponder about what I want in life as well. I think it’s okay to slow down and not be caught in a constant rat race.

I never knew carpooling could be such an enriching experience.

2) Why do you want to win the car?

I’ve always been appreciative of drivers who makes the effort to accept my request and pick me up. Some even try their best to make the ride a comfortable one for the riders. It will be interesting to be able to be in the driver seat instead. This will give me the chance to meet even more people and share the joy of carpooling with RYDE.
